The Arts Education Major (BEd Secondary Education) - BEd(Curtin) - MJRU-ARTST Humanities

Applicants are required to complete a non-academic attributes test prior to graduating, in order to assess suitability for teaching. Applicants will be responsible for meeting any costs associated with this assessment process.

Students are required to provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE) prior to graduation. The test is managed by ACER and details of the test (for example, sample questions, the Test Window dates, and registration) can be found at: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/. Students are responsible for meeting the costs associated with taking these tests, which are a national requirement applicable to all teaching graduates.

Course overview

This major will prepare you with content and pedagogical knowledge to teach the Arts curriculum from Years 7 to 12. If you would like more information about the content of the curriculum in Western Australia, please see the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) website

You will also choose an Arts subject area to further specialise in from the following:
  • Drama
  • Visual Arts
  • Media 
Second specialisation stream
In addition to your major Science subject area, you will choose a second specialisation stream from one of the following options:
  • Minor teaching area – this will be a teaching area other than the Arts
  • Broadening arts subject – additional content units in your chosen subject and the arts curriculum units
  • Education specialty – additional education units and the Arts curriculum units

The Arts Education Major is part of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education).

You will complete four professional experience placements in this course. These placements provide opportunities to practice and demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained under the supervision of a mentor teacher. There may be opportunities for a country, interstate or overseas placement.

The final professional experience placement is referred to as the Internship and is conducted over one school term in a full time block mode.  The Internship is undertaken in a school setting. There may be opportunities for a ‘country practice’ or an interstate Internship placement.

Applicants with recent secondary education (within the past two years) Applicants with recent secondary education are those whose admission is primarily based on the completion of Year 12 within the last two years, but also includes those who may have completed their senior secondary studies with a TAFE or other VET provider within the same time frame. This includes applicants whose secondary education was undertaken interstate or overseas.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not. Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate.

  • Minimum ATAR: 70 This figure refers to the ATAR level below which an application will not be considered. This is not a guarantee of admission.; or
  • A TAFE certificate IV and evidence of English competency, or a TAFE diploma.

Applicants with work and life experience Applicants with work and life experience are those who left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

'Experience' includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

2018 Commonwealth supported What is a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)? - A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government. They pay part of the course fees directly to Curtin and then the student pays the remainder (referred to as the "student contribution amount"). The student can defer this fee to their HECS-HELP loan.

All Australian students studying an undergraduate degree are automatically awarded a Commonwealth supported place. A limited number of Commonwealth supported places are also available for some postgraduate courses.

Professional recognition

This course is recognised nationally as an initial teacher education qualification. It is accredited by the Teachers Registration Board of WA (TRBWA) and graduates will be able to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification.

Advanced standing/credit transfer/recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Credit for recognised learning (CRL) is the term Curtin uses to describe advanced standing, academic credit or recognition of prior learning.

You may be entitled to credit for recognised learning for formal, non-formal or informal learning.

Formal learning is learning that takes place through a structured program of learning that leads to the full or partial achievement of an officially recognised qualification. Recognised institutions include, but are not limited to, RTO providers and universities. Non-formal learning is adult and community education. Informal learning can include on the job learning or various kinds of work and life experience.

Credit can reduce the amount of study needed to complete a degree.

A major component of this course comprises units on teaching strategies, planning lessons, classroom management, learning processes, educational psychology and curriculum studies. You will also complete 18 weeks of teaching practice over the course of your studies, including a 10 week internship where you will have the major responsibility for students’ learning under the mentorship of a qualified teacher.
