Course overview

Studying in the field of finance can open the door to a range of careers nationally and internationally.

This major gives you a broad understanding of corporate and investment finance. You will learn about investment evaluation, how to fund activities, the roles played by financial markets and instruments, structure and operations of financial markets, and financial securities that trade in financial markets.

Finance is offered as part of the Bachelor of Commerce. You can enhance your studies with a secondary major or choose from a range of elective units to support your career goals.

Professional recognition

Graduates may seek membership of professional bodies such as the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance, the Economic Society of Australia and the Financial Planning Association of Australia.

Finance Major (BCom) has also been accepted into the CFA institute University Recognition Program. The Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) credential is the most respected and recognized investment designation in the world and the CFA Program is the first step toward earning this qualification. Recognised status is granted to institutions whose degree program(s) incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK). This provides students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the exams which are part of the CFA program.

Credit for previous study

If you have previously worked or studied in this field, you may be eligible for Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL).

If you are eligible, you may be exempt from completing some units, and you may be able to finish your degree in a shorter amount of time.
