Course overview

Mathematics is the study of concepts such as quantity, structure, space and change. It has been described as the science of patterns, whether found in numbers, space, science, engineering, computers, imaginary abstractions or elsewhere.

Through abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement and the systematic study of shaps and motions of physical objects. Mathematics is used in daily life and extensively in business.

The first year is a foundation year (also called the mathematics pre-major) and provides you with the solid knowledge base you need to pursue further specialised mathematical interests.

The Mathematics foundation year leads to the following major:

Mathematics

To enrol in the Mathematics major, you must apply for the Bachelor of Science (Science) and satisfy the prerequisites for this major.

High achieving students may complete an additional honours year enabling them to undertake their own significant research project.
