Travel the world with a degree in wine

The Australian wine industry has grown rapidly in the past decade and continues to gain market share in export markets where it competes on the basis of both price and quality. The success of the Australian wine industry to date and in the future is reflected in its innovation of the industry and rapid adoption of new science and technology. This course will provide you with a strong industry focus by taking advantage of its location within the Margaret River wine region. It has a solid scientific base which is presented in an industry context to ensure you are career-ready and in high demand upon graduation.

In this course you will study vine physiology, vineyard management, irrigation technology, wine chemistry and microbiology, wine production and science, and wine evaluation. You will also explore the principles and practices of beer brewing. You will apply your theoretical understanding of the viticulture and wine industries through the completion of 12 weeks paid practical experience in vineyards, cellars and wineries, interaction with industry and through the completion of a third year research project.

This course aims to be flexible enough to allow you to obtain work in the industry during your study. Online education delivery systems will be used if you require flexible delivery and the commencement of third year is delayed to enable you to undertake a full-time vintage. You will also be taught by lecturers with significant practical and/or research experience in the wine industry.

High achieving students may complete an additional honours year enabling them to undertake their own significant research project.

Vanessa Carson, Curtin graduate Bachelor of Science (Viticulture and Oenology)

I was first exposed to the wine industry when I started work experience in the Swan Valley when I was 15. I decided early that this was the career path I wanted to follow so when I heard Curtin offered a Viticulture and Oenology course I was immediately interested.

I enjoyed the focus of the course, it was practically orientated which meant as graduates we had confidence upon leaving to start working in a winery and were able to grasp the workings of a winery as well as applying the theory to the practical components of winemaking.

Since graduating I have worked throughout the WA, in the Swan Valley, Margaret River and Frankland regions. This has been interspersed with vintages in Bordeauz and Italy - Trentino Alton-adiege region.

For those thinking about a career in this industry - I believe it to be a career that is fun, as well as a wonderful amalgamation of so many different spectrums. It combines science with art, working outdoors as well as indoors and the challenges and problem solving aspect allows it to be a constantly interesting and evolving work environment.
